M+ brings the experience of Venice Biennale to Hong Kong through a series of public programmes
M+ is going to keep you very busy in the next few months with a series of public programmes to accompany ‘You (you).’ , a major solo exhibition by leading Hong Kong artist Lee Kit - Collateral Event of the 55th International Art Exhibition - la Biennale di Venezia, co-presented by M+ and Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Opening on 1 June and curated by M+ Executive Director Dr Lars Nittve, Lee Kit’s presentation at the Venice Biennale will feature a series of new commissions, including sound, video, performance works and ready-made objects.

To encourage discourse around this important event, M+ will host a series of talks in Hong Kong targeting members of the public including artists, curators, art students. These talks will be presented by some of the world’s most influential curators alongside artists including MAP Office, Kurt Chan, and Kwok Mang-ho (Frog King), and past curators of the Hong Kong pavilion; important members of the arts community based in Hong Kong. The finale will be a response exhibition to be held in mid-2014 in Hong Kong, which will further offer residents an insight into the experience of the Venice Biennale.

As part of its commitment to nurture local talents interested in working in the visual art field, M+ also launched an internship programme for the 55th Venice Biennale, offering people from Hong Kong the chance to gain unique insight into the workings of the world’s oldest and most renowned international art exhibition.

The talk series will kick off with a talk on the history, importance and defining characteristics of the Venice Biennale hosted by Dr Federica Martini, who is a curator and art historian. Looking at the history of the Biennale, Martini will investigate representations of national discourses and moments of institutional critique in contemporary large-scale exhibitions, with a focus on the shifts and changes of paradigm at the Venice Biennale.
