Student Guided Tours Introduce Conceptual Plan Options for the West Kowloon Cultural District to Secondary School Students

guided tourThe Conceptual Plan Options for the West Kowloon Cultural District prepared by three world-class master-planning teams are now being presented in a roving exhibition across the territory. To deepen students’ understanding of the three Conceptual Plans, the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (“the Authority”) has invited all secondary school students in Hong Kong to participate in the roving exhibition guided tours from September to November. The programme has been well-received with more than 60 guided tours for over 3,000 students scheduled.

Participating students and teachers are appreciative of the tours as they consider them as excellent educational topics for Liberal Studies. Not only can the tours introduce the master plans of the WKCD to students, but they can also stimulate student discussions on policy issues and reflect their concerns about the development of the society. After listening to the exhibition guides’ explanations, students studied the models and display panels of the plans in detail and expressed their views on questionnaires.

Most of the students are interested in the environmental concepts and internal and external connectivity arrangements of the three options. Also, they hope that the WKCD can really become a catalyst to enhance the atmosphere of Hong Kong’s arts and cultural scene.

Views from students

guided tour“Each of the three plans has its own distinct features. Foster+ Partners focus on environmental friendliness, yet I think they should increase the proportion of educational facilities. Rocco Design’s art pontoons and their environmental concept of utilizing monsoon wind are very unique. OMA have integrated features from multiple cultures. They have very good ideas on cultural conservation. The only disadvantage is that it looks a bit messy."

guided tour“I found this guided tour very useful as the guide gave us detailed explanations of the three Conceptual Plans. Now I have a better understanding of the West Kowloon Cultural District’s development and the unique features of each Conceptual Plan. What I want the most is to see all the arts facilities come to life as soon as possible for public enjoyment.”

Chan Cho-kwan, Form 5 student,
Yan Oi Tong Tin Ka Ping Secondary School

“I was most impressed by ‘City Parks’ and ‘Project for a New Dimension’. I really appreciate the environmental protection concept of ‘City Park’ where the traffic and pollution are put underground, while pedestrians can enjoy the space above ground. Concepts of zero carbon-emission and electric buses are good too. For ‘Project for a New Dimension’, their proposed cultural facilities are different from other plans. I am looking forward to the opening of their experimental theatre and art school so that I’ll have a chance to work in the arts field in future."

Kwok Chak-kwan, Form 5 student,
Yan Oi Tong Tin Ka Ping Secondary School

“I am really looking forward to the completion of the West Kowloon Cultural District. I like ‘Cultural Connect: Key to Sustained Vitality’ which is based on the concept of ‘Qingming Riverside’. Not only does it show how WKCD can cater to people’s daily needs, but it also provides space for us to express our feelings. This is actually my idea of WKCD.”
